Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

In recent years, the United States has placed an increasing emphasis on maintaining a strong economy and national security by ensuring that its education system and workforce include skilled teachers and practitioners in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Several pieces of national legislation were proposed by Congress in 2013 to ensure an adequate supply of qualified STEM teachers and to encourage students, including women and other under-represented groups, to enter these fields.

National Education Association

National Science Foundation STEM Scholarships
This program from the National Science Foundation awards funds to colleges and universities for scholarships encouraging undergraduate students to pursue employment and advanced educational opportunities in the STEM fields. Several universities in Florida have been funded to do so.

STEM Education Coalition
The STEM Education Coalition promotes STEM education as a national priority. The Coalition’s mission is “to inform federal and state policymakers on the critical role that STEM education plays in U.S. competitiveness and future economic prosperity.”
