The students create and sell small wood products. Most products are based on
holidays or events. The student's research, plan, design and then create the
product. They need to work on what is popular at the particular time, what will
potentially sell, what is needed (supplies), how much, figure a competitive
price, market it, build it and sell it. Students work on the financial aspect
(expense and profit) as well. All the money goes back into the
functional/transitional account to be used for field trips, Thanksgiving feast,
rewards, etc.--things that can go back to the student.

partners with the Auto Tech classes at Charlotte Technical College. Students at
the Real World Employment Skills Training Program wash and detail vehicles that
the students in the Auto Tech classes work on.
The Auto Tech classes fix them and the students participating in the SBE
clean them; this gives the customers a clean car after they get their vehicle
worked on.

Our special education program prepares
students with moderate and severe disabilities to run a cafe that delivers
breakfast to the teachers. The students focus mainly on job skills. Teachers
order their breakfast in the morning by calling into the classroom, stopping in
or through our school e-mail. Once the orders are in my students prepare the
order, deliver and collect the money.

Coast High School partners with two
elementary schools in our district, Pinecrest and Eden Park, that service needy students in a rural/
migrant population. We furnish holiday
gifts, food, clothing, gift cards from individual wish lists. Our entire school community participates.
Our students on a modified curriculum,
create and act in commercials for our school news, collect and organize food, and
gifts. Finally they assist with loading trucks.

Modified curriculum students prepare and deliver breakfast for staff every
morning. Students participate in all
aspects of the cafe, including making shopping lists, purchasing food and
supplies, cooking, delivering, and cleaning.
They also run a cash register and help complete required paperwork for
deposits. Students rotate between
different stations each day so they gain experience with all of the jobs within
the cafe.

entire gardening process and are responsible for caring for the plants. The class also designs and creates baskets

Students learn the basics of business, employment and work skills through this
hands-on learning opportunity. Breakfast is prepared and served 3 days a week
to faculty and staff. The menu has a variety of items including meal options,
breakfast sandwiches, drinks, smoothies, parfaits and so much more! Each
breakfast meal is garnished with fresh seasonal fruit and a homemade muffin.
The cafe also runs weekly breakfast specials of items not included on the menu,
for example, waffles, french toast, baked egg cups, banana bread, cinnamon
rolls and so much more.

old. Student art is showcased at their

students and what they need in the classroom and more art supplies/materials.

Students grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers from seed and seedling plants in four raised beds and two hydroponic units. “Green methods” are used in gardening, and no pesticides are used. Products are sold at the Green Market, which is held in the Wellington High mailroom before school hours. Some products are also sold via school e-mail, and the students deliver the products to teachers and staff. Students track their sales, count the money, and make deposits in the school safe.
