Statewide List of Promising Practices Transition Sites

One of Project 10’s primary initiatives is to improve the development, academic success and post-school outcomes of students served in exceptional student education in Florida.  As part of that initiative, Project 10 provides information on transition sites across the state that incorporate promising practices.

Transition sites described in this section:

  • Base their activities on effective practices and research-based interventions in the area of transition services for youth with disabilities and
  • Model the use of evidence-based student development practices for improving transition outcomes.

These transition sites may serve students at one or more of the following target levels:

  • Middle School/Junior High School
  • High School
  • 18-22 Year Olds
  • Postsecondary

The Newspapers in Education program helps support this community service project. Teachers order the Sunday paper and bring in the coupon pages. Students cut out and sort the coupons into twenty categories such as frozen foods, canned foods, diapers and condiments. Coupons are mailed to a distribution center where they are forwarded to military groups in need. Students are currently working with ROTC to target certain military groups!

The 12+ Program is designed for ESE students, ages 18-21, who have deferred the standard diploma and have appropriate skills to participate in the general education Career & Technical Education courses. It is a unique opportunity for "interns" with significant cognitive disabilities, ages 18-21 who have deferred the standard diploma , to have continuous support within a 1:3 small group ratio from an ESE instructor, job coach and possibly related services staff in order to develop their skills in a community based vocational education program in preparation for adult living. The goal of the program is to move interns from continuous support to a more independent level of functioning for supported employment. Interns may participate 1-4 years depending on their progression of skills and the IEP Team's recommendation for the SITE Program, attaining employment, &/or turning age 22.
