Supporting independent living through affordable, inclusive housing

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) defines transition services in a manner that includes preparing students for independent living, when appropriate. The last part of the definition states that transition services describe a set of activities that include instruction, related services, community experiences, the development of employment and other post-school adult living objectives, and if appropriate, acquisition of daily living skills and functional vocational evaluation. [34 CFR 300.43 (a)] [20 U.S.C. 1401(34)]

Through collaborative work between schools, Centers for Independent Living (CILs) and other community agencies, youth can grow in self-determination and attain access to the experiences and supported needed to achieve independence.
