Promoting a meaningful quality of life for all students with disabilities in the present and in the future

Involvement in leisure and recreation is a part of developing a good quality of life. IDEA (2004) indicates that transition services are comprehensive and support students in all spheres of life. Leisure and recreational activities are an essential piece of the transition process. In fact, King et al., emphasize the important role leisure and recreation play across the entire transition process, "Participation in activities is the context in which people with disabilities, like all people, develop skills and competencies, form friendships and relationships, achieve mental and physical health, express creativity, develop a self-identity and determine meaning and purpose in life," (2003, p. 64).

The Leisure and Recreation Section provides information and resources for school professionals, students and families regarding information that supports a healthy life through leisure and recreational activities for students with disabilities. This section is divided into the following pages:
