Jefferson
Best Friends Creation Shoppe
Somerset-Jefferson K-12
Katrina Snider | ksnider@somersetjefferson.org
Our first SBE is Lend-A-Hand Clerical. We make copies, collate and
distribute to the teachers. Our second SBE is creating Holiday grams
(Halloween-grams and Valentines-grams). The students create specially
designed paper, attach a piece of candy and deliver to the addressee. The
students use a map of the school to deliver. I shadow only for this
service. Finally, we were asked to the Tree Lighting Ceremony herein
Monticello. We created Soup in a Jar, Cookies in a Jar, handmade OJO's,
and homemade cookies. All students participate in the creation of these
products and then are shadowed by the staff in the classroom. Students learned
how to make the change, measure using fractions, and how to make a homemade
product. Scripts are created and practiced in the classroom along with mock scenarios.
We will also be Lending-A-Hand-Cleaning. This is where we take the
uniforms here at school and wash them, fold and return. Also, for
Lending-A-Hand-Cleaning, we will assist in washing tables in the cafeteria and
cleaning-up in the cafeteria with the custodians.

Mission: Provide training opportunities for students with disabilities to develop employable skills through hands-on participation in all facets of the foodservice industry and obtain paid positions. The Legacy Café, David Miller Center for Successful Transition was dedicated in 2012 in recognition of longtime Superintendent Miller’s commitment to success for all students. It is housed in the cafeteria of the former Crawfordville Elementary School, currently the Wakulla County School District Office and serves as a training ground for students with disabilities to develop skills in culinary arts, hygiene, social communication, maintenance and the business of running a restaurant through hands-on participation. Students plan the menu, shop for the food and supplies, prepare and serve the food, collect money, and perform the maintenance duties (laundry, dish-washing and cleaning). Participating students come from the Wakulla High School Exceptional Student Education Program and the Program for Adults with Disabilities. Beginning in 2013, the students have expanded the business to include a boutique offering the sale of handcrafted items.
